The cable is simply applied to the pipe, either straight along or spiraled, depending on the type of installation, and connected to the power supply. Some cables will require a separate thermostats to control operation, some will not. Normally pipes are insulated to provide maximum freeze protection / temperature maintenance and to minimize energy consumption.
